From Beeropedia

Halloween beers tend to lean heavily into theme and fun rather than strict tradition. Unlike styles that are tied to climate or history, Halloween beers are mostly about atmosphere — spooky labels, seasonal flavours, and limited releases designed to be enjoyed once a year.

The most common Halloween beers fall into two broad groups:

  • Pumpkin beers – usually ales brewed with pumpkin, pumpkin spice, or autumn spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove
  • Spooky-themed beers – standard beer styles dressed up with creepy names, dark artwork, and Halloween branding

Pumpkin beers are especially popular in the United States, where pumpkin spice flavours are closely associated with Halloween. These beers range from subtle, malty ales with light spice notes to full-on dessert-style beers that taste more like pumpkin pie than beer.

The second category is all about presentation. Breweries often release dark beers — such as stouts, porters, or black IPAs — with spooky names and artwork to match the spooky season. The beer inside may or may not be radically different from a regular release, but the Halloween theme makes it part of the fun.

Like most seasonal beers, Halloween beers are usually limited releases, appearing in the lead-up to Halloween and disappearing shortly after. If you see one you like, it’s generally a good idea to grab it while you can. Even if the same brewery releases the same beer each year, it can be different - which is a feature!
